Homeric Hymn to Asklepios

Roman mosaic depicting the arrival of Asclepius at Kos, where he is received by Hippocrates and a citizen, circa 2nd–3rd century CE; Archaeological Museum, Kos

Homeric Hymn 16
To Asklepios

1] I begin to sing of Asklepios, son of Apollon and healer of sicknesses.

In the Dotian plain fair Koronis, daughter of King Phlegyas, bare him, a great joy to men, a soother of cruel pangs.

[5] And so hail to you, lord: in my song I make my prayer to thee!
